INTRODUCTION TO SOFT PASTEL

Pastels have a depth and richness to them that is unique. Begin with the fun of blending colors before moving on to defining shapes in a still life. You will learn basic composition and other techniques to add life and drama to your drawings.

DRAWING & WATERCOLOR

Explore the possibilities of drawing and watercolor painting! If you want to paint realistically, it's appropriate to learn basic drawing techniques. Through exercises and demonstrations we will do both. Students will learn a new appreciation for both mediums and several finished pieces to show for it.

SILK PAINTING BASICS

 

This class is for the beginning silk painter.. This course will cover the following techniques including; mono-printing, stenciling, and stamping using your own cut stamps and stencils. We will also review and use wet on wet, free flow, stop flow, salting, thickened dyes, and resist methods. Our goal in this class will be to paint and design a variety of silk scarves using all of the above techniques. (Includes some materials)

INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED DRAWING

Drawing is an important tool in the development of a fine artist. Classically trained fine artist, Igor Koutsenko, will share with you the universal rules of how to draw and develop your own unique style. Students will learn a variety of drawing techniques through individual instruction and class demonstrations. Students will work with objects as well as life models.

PAINTING OPEN STUDIO II

Join a group of artists who are working on developing their unique visual voice. Each artist is encouraged to participate in the group and solo shows to become an active part of the arts community.

STAINED GLASS

Learn the craft of leaded stained glass composition and creation. You create an original stained glass piece from your own drawings, while learning to pattern, cut glass, assemble, solder and finish your project. Your glass adventure begins here! Tools are for sale in SDAD's store.

GLASS FUSING AS ART

Learn the basics of glass fusing construction. Explore fusing and slumping glass in the kiln to make both art pieces and functional ware. Create designs by layering sheets of glass, making patterns and using color.

PAINTING & THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Unlock your creative mind! Learn how to open your creative process through painting. Deron teaches color theory, the elements & principles of design, and how to develop your own personal method for deciding what and how to paint. This class is open to oil or acrylic painters.

PAINTING IN OILS

Learning to draw the human form is an adventure! You learn to define the posture and mood of each figure pose through quick gesture drawings and longer poses. You become familiar with proportions and anatomy, but mostly the emphasis is on the intuitive quality of lines and shading techniques that give depth to the form.

Have you ever wondered what shutter spee, aperture size, ISO settings, and depth-of-field all have to do with taking a picture? In this class you will learn how to crop an image, proper lighting, and how to capture what you see. Instruction includes weekly shooting assignments, class critiques, and discussions. A fully manual camera is required.

PERSONALIZED JOURNAL WORKSHOP

Learn various collage techniques as you creatively design a journal for special gift giving occasions (i.e. father's day), journal entries, treasured photos, and sketching. All levels welcome. All materials included.

MONOTYPE & LINOLEUM WORKSHOP

Printmaking is a centuries old technique for creating art and illustrations in multiple orignals. In this 4 hour workshop, we will be covering monotype and linoleum techniques. Monotype is a very exciting and spontaneous technique, similar in some ways to painting. Linoleum is suitable to create cards designs. We will be working in black & white, although if time allows we wmay also do a two color print. Some materials included.

SILVER RING WORKSHOP

Create your own ring from sterling silver! Exploring soldering and textures on sterling to create a unique design. By the end of the workshop you will be leaving SDAD with a ring on your finger! Beginners and beyond welcome. . All materials included.

MINI WORKS OF ORIGINAL ART

Learn how to create Artist Trading Cards (ATC's) and join the worldwide phenomenon of trading and collecting art by artists near and far. ATC's are original works of art limited to a 2.5" x 3.5" size that are perfect for the variety of collage techniques you will learn in this workshop. ATC"s also can include your current contact info to create a unique business card for yourself. You will have fun creating many cards in class to trade with other workshop participants. GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT: THE ART OF ENCAUSTIC PAINTING

 

Explore the magical world of encaustic painting and discover a lost art that has intrigued painter for over 2000 years. Encaustic means "to heat or to burn" so heat is used at every level. During this four hour workshop you will learn the history of encaustic, safety practices, use of equipment and basic techniques including photo transfer, collage, and incising. You will have many opportunities to work and leave at the end of the day with many examples of your own encaustic art. All supplies are included in this 4 hour workshop.

Comic Creations: Explore the process of creating characters and complete a finished comic page, from rough to inks. Learn character design, story boarding, page layout, expression and composition while putting together your very own comic.

ART EXPLORERS: PRINTMAKING AND SCREENPRINTING & JEWELRY DESIGN AND CREATION

Art Explorers: Printmaking & Screenprinting: Explore the possibilities and unleash your creativity while experimenting with printmaking and screen printing techniques.  This class promises to be fun and enlightening!

Jewelry Design & Creation: Imagine making your own wearable art! We will explore bead stringing and design, polymer clay bead making and get creative with recycled materials.

SKATEBOARDS AND LOGO DESIGN

for ages 12-17

In this class, teens will design their own skateboard deck and custom logos! Work with skateboard designers from Soul Ryde Inc. to create and unique and personalized skateboard. Then you will complete your look by designing your very own logo.

WEEK 4:

MIXED MEDIA SCULPTURE GOES GREEN! & COMMUNITY DANCE

Mixed Media Sculpture Goes Green: Imagine the endless possibilities of creating unique sculpture through combining a variety of recycled and found objects. You learn about constructing sculpture, the principles of 3-D design and the environment while creating your very own one-of-a-kind sculptures!

Community Dance (At Eveoke Dance Theatre-2811-A University Ave, San Diego, CA 92104): The world can also be discovered anew through dance!  Work with teaching artists from Eveoke Dance Theatre to find and express your voice through creative movement.  This summer students will be exploring different aspects of community and how we can change or community for the better.On Wednesday, students will take a field trip to the beach with Eveoke Dance theatre transportation.  Students will return at 4pm on that Wednesday!  Eveoke always finds the positive and the inspiring through true community-building.  A student culminating performance will be held on Friday, August 2nd at 2pm.  You will leave the week with excitement and hope about what you can contribute to our community! (Students will be accompanied by an adult to the dance theatre and should be picked up at their location.)

DRAW IT ALL! & WATERCOLOR PAINTING

Draw it All: Imagine the wonderful possibilities of creating unique drawings and sketching beautiful landscapes or capturing a funny moment. Learn to communicate with pictures as you explore line, shape, form, gesture, shading and value in black and white and color. Use nature, still life and self portraits as the subject matter while you explore the elements and concepts of drawing in this fun class.

Watercolor Painting: Move fast and spontaneously using a variety of watercolor techniques. Find new ways to express your creative imagination with this fun and versatile medium.  Explore the world of watercolors!
